Port Name Description
Nafplion is a seaport town in the Peloponnese region of Greece that expands up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. This is simply one of the most beautiful towns in the area of Argolis (in eastern Peloponnese) as well as one of the mostromantic cities all over Greece. SeaDream has the option to anchor allowing water sports or to dock in the heart of town offering amazing access. Some guests will climb nearly 1000 steps to the fortress. Others may want to participate in the wine tasting adventure or to Visit Mycenae.
So narrow! So dramatic! You'll understand why SeaDream says "expect the unexpected" as your yacht transits the Corinth Canal. The canal was first completed in the 1893, despite previous attempts from ancient times; the first plans being from 602BC. The Roman emporer Nero actually started construction in 67AD, making the first cut himself with a golden pick. The canal we transit is 6.3 kilometres (3.9 mi) in length. Before the canal, ships sailing between the Aegean and the Adriatic had had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese Peninsula adding about 185 nautical miles to their voyage.
There is one main town on Hydra, known simply as "Hydra port". It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area. The charm of Hydra town certainly lies in her rich history, beautiful port and waterfront unspoiled by motorized vehicles. The island offers a rugged charm and some spectacular scenes, and makes the perfect place for some self-exploration.
Itea is a small town situated on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth, 2 km west of Kirra, 8 km southwest of Delphi. The town has a nice beach along with some shops, cafes and restaurants. It allows the closest access to the incredible sight of Delphi which is within the top three archeological attractions in Greece and in 1987 was inscribed as a UNESCO Heritage Site. It is believed the Zeus wanted to find the center of the Earth so he sent two eagles flying from the eastern and western extremities and where they met was Delphi – becoming the “navel/center of the earth”. SeaDream has arranged the very best guides and vehicles from Athens to further enhance this incredible visit. Your guided visit highlights the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo, where Pythia, the celebrated Oracle dwelt, the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Way, the amphitheater, the best preserved stadium of Greece, and the Castalia Spring, where in ancient days the pilgrims had to wash before they were allowed to consult the Oracle. In the Delphi Museum, see such treasures as the Omphalos, which marked the center of the world, and the magnificent bronze Charioteer, one of the finest pieces surviving from the 5th century BC. After the museum there will be free time to visit the village of Delphi. SeaDream has the option of docking along the small pier in Itea or anchoring off to provide water sports options. This is dependent on availability as well as the amount of guests visiting the archeological site.
Parga is a resort town located in the northwestern part of Preveza in Epirus. Parga lies on the Ionian coast between the cities of Preveza and Igoumenitsa. This resort town is particularly known for its scenic beauty. Active guests love the Acheron River Safari adventure. Others enjoy a stroll through the town and playing from the marina in the afternoon.
Corfu is the second largest Greek island in the Ionian Sea and considered to be the greenest. The municipality includes the island Corfu and the smaller islands of Ereikoussa, Mathraki and Othonoi. Its Greek name, Kerkyra or Korkyra, is related to two powerful water symbols: Poseidon, god of the sea, and Asopos, an important Greek mainland river. In 2007, the islands old town was inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. SeaDream docks at the cruise port and offers guests an assortment of varied Land Adventures. A shuttle bus will be arranged to the old town and the mountain bikes will be available for independent exploration. Perhaps the most popular attraction on the island other than the impressive old town is the Achillion Palace the summer palace of Austria’s Empress Elizabeth. It truly is worth exploring.
Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro. The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by an impressive city wall built by the Republic of Venice and the Venetian influence remains dominant among the architectural influences. In 1979 the Bay of Kotor, City of Kotor and the surrounding territory have been listed in the UNESCO Heritage as a Cultural Site. SeaDream usually navigates close by the small islands of St. George and Our Lady of the Reef. The Bay of Kotor stretches 28 km and is one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea. It is sometimes called the southern-most fjord in Europe (though it is actually a submerged river canyon called a ria). SeaDream typically docks steps away from the town. SeaDream has arranged a few different Yachting Land Adventures. One of them is a walking discovery and the other will show you the heritage and countryside of Montenegro. For the active guests, there’s incredible biking along the coast as well as a hike up to the fortress. On occasion, SeaDream may dock in the bay and tender directly to the town. We regret that watersports are not allowed in this protected area.
Hvar is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. The island of Hvar is somewhat unusual as it is blessed with a large fertile coastal plain, and fresh water springs. Its hillsides are covered in pine forests, with vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and lavender fields in the agricultural areas. The climate is characterized by mild winters, and warm summers with many hours of sunshine. Guests have an option to kayak down the coastline on one of our land adventures or take an independent hike up to the fortress to have some incredible views of the picturesque harbor. You also have an option to bike across the island to Starigrad and meet up with the other guests on the land adventure called “The best of Both Worlds”.
Dubrovnik (Pearl of the Adriatic) is one of the most prominent destinations in the Adriatic Sea. It lies in the region of Dalmatia and was awarded World Unesco Heritage status in 1979. The population is approximately 43,000 and is considered to be among the 10 best medieval walled cities in the world. SeaDream anchors off the walled city as a port of call and tenders directly to the town gate. If you check the land adventures tab you will see that there are many different options to consider in this incredible town. Dubrovnik is also an embarkation point on select voyages. On these occasions the yacht is docked at the cruise terminal.
Athens is the capital as well as the largest city in Greece. It is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. SeaDream will embark guests from the port of Piraeus. Should you desire a private arrangement, transfer, or other local service, please see the Land Adventures tab for our destination specialists information.

Hotels and Pre and Post Options

SeaDream's View: Once the private residence of a wealthy expatriate Greek, the Hotel Grande Bretagne is an architectural landmark and the historic Grande dame of the city. It was recently lavishly restored and converted to a palace hotel. We at SeaDream think it is one of Europe's finest hotels. We absolutely love its convenient location - the best in Athens, and within walking distance from the fashionable Kolonaki Square with exclusive shopping, entertainment, restaurants and cafes. Also within walking distance are important museums and the historic and picturesque old quarter of Plaka with taverns, open-air coffee shops, flea market and souvenir shops. The hotel offers 321 rooms but we recommend at least a deluxe room or one of the only 22 Junior Suites; so book early and ask for one that offers splendid views of the Acropolis, Parliament and National Gardens. We also enjoy the outdoor roof top pool and highly recommend dinner in the GB Roof Garden Restaurant. Why? You'll never forget the view, the delicious food and the mix of local and international guests that fill the restaurant nightly. Reserve early and enjoy. Don't forget to visit their web site for more information and photos. Corinth Canal (Transit)

Transiting The Corinth Canal

So narrow! So dramatic! You'll understand why SeaDream says "expect the unexpected" as your yacht transits the Corinth Canal. The Corinth Canal was built in the late nineteenth century and created a new sea route by linking the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs. Until that time, ships sailing between the Aegean and the Adriatic had had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese Peninsula adding about 185 nautical miles to their voyage. However, in antiquity the Greeks had devised a way of solving the problem of communications between the two seas. In the late seventh or early sixth century BC, the tyrants of Corinth constructed a paved road called the Diolkos, which led from Schinous on the Saronic Gulf to Poseidonia on the Gulf of Corinth. The Dioikos was 3- 3.5 m. wide, and it was paved with blocks of limestone set in a deep layer of sand and gravel. Along this ran the U¯lkos, U¡ wheeled vehicle on which ships were borne overland from one side of the Isthmus to the other. Sections of the Diolkos can still be seen today; the deep parallel ruts in the road, 1.50 m. apart, are the marks left by the wheels of the olkos. The ancient Greeks had of course, considered the possibility of digging a canal through the Isthmus. The first to look into the matter was Periander, tyrant of Corinth, who drew up a plan for a canal in 602 BC. Subsequent planners included Demetrius Poliorcetes, Julius Caesar and Caligula. These plans were later adopted by Nero, who in 67 AD announced to the spectators at the Isthmian Games that he was going to join the two seas by digging a canal through the Isthmus; indeed, he went so far as to cut the first turf himself, with a golden pick, and to carry the first basket of earth on his back. But his plans came to nothing, as did those of Herodes Atticus, the Byzantines and the Venetians in later times. The canal we see today was built in 1882 -1893 by Greek and French engineers using the most advanced machinery of the day. General supervision of the enormous undertaking was in the hands of General Stepan U”U»pp, aide-de-camp to the King of Italy. The project was completed by the Greek Corinth Canal Company.

Notes The canal is 6,343 m. in length. It has a width of 24.60 m. at surface level and 21.30 m. at the seabed, and in some places its sides are 79 m. high. The canal is crossed by road and railway bridges, while communications between Central Greece and the Peloponnese are also served by two ferries in the form of submersible bridges, one at either end (Poseidonia and Isthmia).

This guided walk through the walled town is an excellent opportunity to not only get to know your way around for later independent explorations but your knowledge and experienced guide will provide you with a historic insight and context to let you appreciate this beautiful town to its fullest. As you arrive at the walled city of Dubrovnik via SeaDream tender and enter its fortress walls through the Harbor Gate, gaze up at the ever-watchful St. Blaise, the patron saint of the city. Once inside, you are sure to notice immediately the absence of signage and neon, its stone-paved Stradun Avenue lined with graceful stone palazzos, shops, sidewalk cafes and government buildings all looking as they did hundreds of years ago. Along the way we visit, among other places the Maritime Museum with a special emphasis on the glorious period of seamanship under Dubrovnik Republic in the 16th century, the Rector's Palace (15th century) once the seat of the Government and Rector in the, once, independent Republic of Dubrovnik (abolished by Napoleon in 1808). The main shrine of the monastery is the tomb of St. Lucas, originally situated in the vault, but later placed at the juncture of the two churches, the church of Theotokos and the Catholic Church which is the oldest in the complex tentatively dated to 1011-1012.

Arachova is a mountain small town and its quaint houses are built up on the north slopes of Mount Parnassos, with 3300 inhabitants, 800 – 1100m (2600-3610 feet) altitude. In 2000 B.C. Homer mentioned in the Iliad two famous generals who took part in the Trojan War Epistrophos and Schedias from the old towns of Anemoria and Kiparissos. These old towns were situated around where Arachova stands today. Later, in about 334 B.C. Philip the 2nd king of Macedonia destroyed both towns and their populations dispersed over the hills until over the year’s one new town, Arachova, was built. Today the 'jewel' of Parnassos Arachova remains vital because it keeps its' traditions alive and the residents remain simple and hospitable. Legends & History - Helen of Troy, a Visit to Mycenae

With the excellent Athens based guides and transport, you are quickly spirited along the very good roads on a scenic drive through Náfplion and past the ancient sites of Tiryns and Argos. Soon you will reach the world-famous archaeological site of Mycenae having gained your first historic introduction from the commentaries of your guide. Mycenae is the palace of Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek forces that went off to fight the famous war at Troy, where Paris, the Trojan Prince, had taken beautiful Helen, wife of Agamemnon’s brother, Menelaus, king of Sparta. The classic epic, composed by Homer, was the subject of the film “Troy” starring Mr. Brad Pitt in the role of Achilles. The German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in 1876, who was obsessed with finding the grave of King Agamemnon, carried out the first in-depth excavations. Mr. Schliemann also, in 1874, discovered the site of Troy in Asia Minor. Not bad for a German amateur archaeologist who made his fortune in the grocery trade! His diligent work exposed the famous Lions Gate, the entrance to the city, which contains the shaft burial graves of some ancient nobles. A short distance away is the Beehive Tomb, so called due to its unusual shape. In only 25 days Mr. Schliemann discovered a huge collection of jewelry vases and precious items, including the often-photographed Gold Mask, all, which are now important exhibits in the Athens Museum; if you pass through Athens on your trip, don’t miss to visit the museum. At the conclusion of your visit to Mycenae, return to enjoy the village of Náfplion on your own, or head back to the yacht.

Parga

Acheron River Safari - The River Styx of Greek Myth

You start your adventure with a 5 minute walk through the Old town of Parga where you board your coach for a drive to the beautiful Gliki village. This little village sits inland next to the picturesque Acheron river. Acheron was known as the mystical river Styx of Greek mythology believed to lead to the entrance of the underworld and Kingdom of Hades. Following a 10 minutes walk from the village you reach the banks of the river where your exploration will start. You change into your swimming suit and waterproof shoes and wade into the clear waters. The river is very shallow in most parts and flows peacefully through the spectacular Gliki gorge. As the gorge gets narrow the water level gradually rises but you will be able to stop at the depth you feel most comfortable with. Finish your exploration with a refreshing glass of wine and a snack of fresh baked chicken with Greek salad and bread at a riverside tavern before your return to the yacht.

Notes Bring your swimwear, waterproof shoes and a towel. The air-conditioned coach ride to Gliki village takes about half and hour. A minimum participation is required to operate all Yachting Land Adventures and some have limited capacity. This program is booked onboard only so please make your reservations as soon as possible after boarding to avoid disappointment.
