Port Name Description
Far North Queensland was still a fairly isolated region when gold was found along the Hodgkinson River in 1876. The sheltered Dickson Inlet was close enough though and the rush was on. Cristofero Palmerston, one of the hopeful gold-seekers, cut a trail to the coast. Known as 'the bump' among miners, it was not long before others followed Palmerston's path, and a town was established. After several names, such as Island Point and Salisbury (for British Prime Minister Lord Salisbury), the town was named to honor Queensland Premier John Douglas.
A sliver of tropical Australian determination set beside a remote stretch of the Coral Sea, Cooktown is a picture-postcard Queensland community. Little seems to have changed since Captain James Cook beached the HMS Endeavour on the south bank of the town river which the good captain named after his ship. The event qualifies Cooktown as Australia’s first European settlement. Australians refer to the wilderness as ‘outback,’ and nowhere is it quite as accessible as it is in Cooktown. The local vet may just as often care for an injured or lost Wallaby as someone’s pet dog. Just off the pier, don’t miss the colorful Milibi Wall - a succinct recount of Cooktown history.
The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system.
Administrative center for the Torres Strait Archipelago, Thursday Island is known as Waiben among indigenous Kaurareg people. Related to the earliest Australians, their ancestors were likely stranded at the end of the last ice age when large sections of the land bridge linking Papua New Guinea and Far North Queensland sank beneath the waves. But if you had to choose a place to be stuck, you could hardly do better. Nature has used every color to paint the local scenery – especially every subtle shade of blue. And if you wonder what Captain Bligh and his party were doing the other days, visit neighboring Wednesday or Friday Islands.
It doesn't get much more remote than Australia's Coburg Peninsula. British settlers tried to establish a community in the early days, but it failed – the ruin at Port Essington is the only proof of the endeavor. There are a few outposts in the remote region to serve intrepid backpackers, but little in between. Sudden squalls are common in the Tropical "top end," but they often dissipate as quickly as they appear. The exclusive Seven Spirit Bay Resort at Vashon Head is a pretty OK place to wait out a storm, however.
Aborigine culture is especially evident in Northern Territories (NT), and while Westerners think in terms of a unified cultural group, there are more than 60 distinct tribal groups in NT alone. Aboriginal ancestors have been in Australia at least 40,000 years, so Darwin, established as Palmerston in the early 1800s, is a fairly new place. In 1839, Lt. John Lort Stokes of the HMS Beagle renamed it Darwin to honor the famous naturalist (Charles himself never saw the port). Hearty Darwinians are fond of celebrations – any excuse will do. Enjoy your SeaDream visit with a flightseeing adventure to Kakadu National Park, or visit the Crocs up close and personal at Litchfield Park.
Lofty Atauro Island, rising from the misty sea, is a handsome natural sentry for the Port of Dili. Cave paintings, pottery shards, and stone relics suggest people have lived in the region for at least 4,000 years. But the earliest written reference to the island comes from a 13th-century Chinese navigational logbook. The sailor probably smelled sweet sandalwood long before he saw land. Formerly occupied by Indonesian troops, the young nation of Timor L'este won independence in May 2002. Portuguese influence is on full display, beginning with the Rio-esque Cristo Redentor statue on a hill near the capital. SeaDream offers a historical Land Adventure, a scenic drive around the island, and a diving excursion (participants must carry proof of certification) at this destination.
Timor is the driest of the Indonesian Islands, a peculiar climate that favors sandalwood trees. Many people believe fragrant groves once covered both Timor and neighboring Sumba. Among the first colonial bases in the region, the island was introduced to Christian faith, so Timor is a rather odd place in a largely Muslim nation. Portuguese Monks became the first Europeans to record landing on Timor in the mid-16th century. Seizing on the great wealth promised by Timorese sandalwood, they soon established a mini-trading empire. SeaDream Land Adventures will explore the historic village of Kupang.
Flores is a Portuguese word that means flowers but it is a wonder the island name stuck. The island is certainly fertile, but there are few wild flowers in the countryside. Portuguese influence persists, so like their West Timor neighbors, the people of Flores are predominantly Christian. The island is 220 mi/355 km long, but the main road is twice that long. Relentlessly undulating terrain accounts for the difference. Larantuka, the tiny capital of East Flores Regency, is nestled snugly between the sea and looming Gunung (volcano) Ile Mandiri.
Komodo Island is best known for its indigenous Komodo Dragons – considered the last of their kind. Known locally as ora, the giant monitor lizards can grow to more than 9 ft/2.75 m and 300 lbs/136 kg. All monitor lizards, so named for their natural association (monitor in the sense of 'detection') with the presence of crocodiles, are big animals. More important, however, Komodo Dragon jaws are powerful and both teeth and talons are as sharp as razor blades. Their saliva hosts a deadly bacterium that quickly disables prey. SeaDream guests will have the unique opportunity to meet Komodo Dragons accompanied by a Park Ranger.
Only a narrow strait separates tiny Satonde Island from Sumbawa's northern shore. The volcanic island is uninhabited, making it a perfect destination for your yacht. A trail leads from the natural pumice-lined beach for those wishing to explore the interior and caldera. Inside the partially collapsed volcanic crater, the island's salt lake, fed by an underground channel, is well known among a small group of devoted fans. Mysterious stone monuments appear to mark ancient burial sites.
The aroma of fragrant spice leads you to Bali's shores. The tiny clove-scented island off Java's southeastern tip is steeped in tradition, and unique Balinese Hindu-animist faith is on full display. Although Besakih is the mother shrine (Ulun Danu, Tanah Lot and Goa Lawah are also notable), even the island's tiniest villages have at least one temple. But Bali displays a second nature – especially in the south around the areas of Kuta Beach and Nusa Dua. Here, visitors worship another spirit – the Goddess who presides over a delightful land of luxurious decadence. SeaDream is offering several active Land Adventures at Benoa. Enjoy a challenging round of golf, take a painting lesson or learn some exciting new cooking techniques from a master chef.
Cairns is a cosmopolitan city with a population of approximately 140,000 that is very focused on the tourism industry. This city also happens to be the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and very popular with international tourists. Japanese tourists are especially catered for, with many shops' signs being written in Japanese, as well as in English. The city is surrounded by rainforest and can be used as a gateway to destinations such as Kuranda and the Daintree. Besides tourism, the city is supported by agricultural activities which include sugar cane, bananas, coffee, tea and the world's first tropical fruit wine region. SeaDream will be docked in the center of town to welcome our arrivals. For guests in transit, we have several Land Adventures options for your exploration of the city.

Komodo Diving at Pink Beach

OYour dive site at Pink Beach is called Pantai Merah by local people. The naming describes the place well: it has red colored sand. This Komodo diving site is part of Komodo Island's shoreline. The current represents the transition between the temperate water in the south and the tropical water of the north Marine life is rich here with the schooling fish, fusiliers, as the dominant species. When you go deeper, you find pelagic such as snapper, trevallies, and sweetlips. At around 25m, the coral outcrops drops rather slightly. Around the corals, you can find reef fish like cardinal, butterfly, damselfish, grouper, angel, batfish, anthias, wrasse, surgeon, parrot, box, trigger, porcupine, and puffer. Flounder, Moray, Gobies, Frogfish, Eels and Leaf fish are permanent bottom dwellers at this Komodo diving site. Octopus, shrimp and crabs are easily visible.
