Port Name Description
Komodo Island is best known for its indigenous Komodo Dragons – considered the last of their kind. Known locally as ora, the giant monitor lizards can grow to more than 9 ft/2.75 m and 300 lbs/136 kg. All monitor lizards, so named for their natural association (monitor in the sense of 'detection') with the presence of crocodiles, are big animals. More important, however, Komodo Dragon jaws are powerful and both teeth and talons are as sharp as razor blades. Their saliva hosts a deadly bacterium that quickly disables prey. SeaDream guests will have the unique opportunity to meet Komodo Dragons accompanied by a Park Ranger.
Flores is a Portuguese word that means flowers but it is a wonder the island name stuck. The island is certainly fertile, but there are few wild flowers in the countryside. Portuguese influence persists, so like their West Timor neighbors, the people of Flores are predominantly Christian. The island is 220 mi/355 km long, but the main road is twice that long. Relentlessly undulating terrain accounts for the difference. Larantuka, the tiny capital of East Flores Regency, is nestled snugly between the sea and looming Gunung (volcano) Ile Mandiri.
A glimpse of Banda Neira’s (aka, Banda Naira) striking natural beauty leaves you with no doubt about why Dutch colonists erected imposing Fort Belgica above the harbor to defend it. In fact, the fort, as well as its smaller companion, Fort Nassau, was originally a Portuguese construction. But the colonial town –the only developed harbor in the Banda Archipelago – is unmistakably Dutch. The nine other Banda Islands are sometimes called ‘the Spice Islands’ – according to legend, they are the source of mace and nutmeg.
New Guinea is the world's second largest island after Greenland, and Indonesia's largest province, Irian Jaya is the island's western half. The province accounts for 22% of Indonesian land, but sections are still only accessible by hiking several days. Jayapura ('City of Victory') is a bustling modern capital. Verdant Cyclops Mountain towers majestically above the port and there are inviting white sand beaches nearby. Established as the Dutch colonial port of Hollandia in 1910, the name was changed to Jayapura when western New Guinea joined Indonesia in a 1969. SeaDream Land Adventure participants will explore the city and its Spiritual roots.
Marking the delta of the mighty Sepik River, the longest river in PNG and one of the least polluted waterways in the world, Watam and Kopar villages offer a warm welcome to our westernmost point in PNG. The Sepik is the basis of local culture, food, medicine, magic and, in short, life itself. Everything and everyone is subject to the forces of the river and all that it brings. The small village we will be visiting will offer us a display of local customs and dances that give us a direct look back in time and into a culture that measures its existence here in thousands of years. The call of the conch shell, the beating of the kundu drum and the chanting of the villagers will be a long lasting memory of our time here. We can expect a dramatic scene as several villages will be coming to take part in our welcome. We will be free to wander through the village and gardens accompanied by our hosts who will likely be as curious of us as we are of them. You’ll see the sacred men’s hut, and visit where the locals keep their treasures which have been handed down from generation to generation for many centuries. Its a fitting end to our time in PNG; one that will always stir up memories of gentle handshakes, shy smiles and the warmest welcomes any where on Earth.
Located 13 kilometers off the eastern tip of the tiny islands of Tami are made up of four uplifted coral atolls just under a kilometer in length. Protected from the social issues associated with the Lae and the Huon Peninsula, Tami Islanders enjoy an idyllic lifestyle set against a backdrop of clear lagoons, coconut palms and golden sand. Once again, we have a dramatic welcome as soon as we step ashore. A ‘sing-sing’ has been prepared for us, and you’ll be mesmerized by the chanting and rhythmic movements of the locals. You’ll get an opportunity to come face to face with people who have lived here for millennia. With our expedition guides on shore to guide you, you will be welcomed to observe their lifestyle first hand. Everything here revolves around the sea and we will notice this theme in the food, building materials, transport, art and culture of this little piece of paradise.
An anthropological mecca, the Trobriand Islands have long been nicknamed (somewhat misleadingly) as ‘The Islands of Love’ and remain one of the most culturally intact destinations in PNG. The strong local culture produces some of the finest quality artisan crafts in the Pacific. Set against the idyllic tropical island scenery, you will leave with lasting memories of friendly islanders, peaceful villages, shy laughing children and a vision into a genuine piece of paradise. When landing ashore, you will experience the colorful and powerful performance for which the trobriands are renown performed. Young warriors and local maidens will be dancing right on the golden sands where our Zodiacs land. Afterwards we will be invited to hike up to the village to observe the proudly maintained gardens and thatched roof homes of our charming hosts. This is the primary day of our voyage for purchasing artisanal handcrafts first hand from the very people that weave and carve them. Today is also an excellent opportunity to relax and enjoy a vision of unspoiled paradise. We have arranged exclusive access to a nearby, uninhabited islet. Here, our SeaDream hotel team will have prepared a wonderful BBQ as you take in the idyllic scene.
Capital of Milne Bay, Alotau is a small outpost at the far eastern end of the PNG mainland and signals our arrival in ‘The Land of the Unexpected’. The site of deadly and dramatic fighting in World War II, Alotau has a permanent place in history that is much better understood when one stands at this critically strategic Pacific crossroad. This quintessential ‘South Seas town’ moves at a slow pace and exudes a tropical charm that begins with the warm welcome we will receive from the curious locals. Alotau inhabitants have long had contact with westerners through missionaries, soldiers and generations of sailors who have passed through, but by virtue of the lack of road access to other parts of PNG, Alotau retains a reputation as proudly distant from the more mainstream elements of Port Moresby. Our tours here will focus on the various points of interest, but everyone will get their first introduction to PNG culture with a warm and colorful welcome ashore as you meet the charming locals. An optional tour will journey along the coast and into the jungle to revisit key World War II sites, which were pivotal turning points in the War. For those interested in the natural history, our guides will lead you on hikes and bird watching tours from the beach.
Cairns is a cosmopolitan city with a population of approximately 140,000 that is very focused on the tourism industry. This city also happens to be the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and very popular with international tourists. Japanese tourists are especially catered for, with many shops' signs being written in Japanese, as well as in English. The city is surrounded by rainforest and can be used as a gateway to destinations such as Kuranda and the Daintree. Besides tourism, the city is supported by agricultural activities which include sugar cane, bananas, coffee, tea and the world's first tropical fruit wine region. SeaDream will be docked in the center of town to welcome our arrivals. For guests in transit, we have several Land Adventures options for your exploration of the city.
The aroma of fragrant spice leads you to Bali's shores. The tiny clove-scented island off Java's southeastern tip is steeped in tradition, and unique Balinese Hindu-animist faith is on full display. Although Besakih is the mother shrine (Ulun Danu, Tanah Lot and Goa Lawah are also notable), even the island's tiniest villages have at least one temple. But Bali displays a second nature – especially in the south around the areas of Kuta Beach and Nusa Dua. Here, visitors worship another spirit – the Goddess who presides over a delightful land of luxurious decadence. SeaDream is offering several active Land Adventures at Benoa. Enjoy a challenging round of golf, take a painting lesson or learn some exciting new cooking techniques from a master chef.
Alotau, Milne Bay

Alotau Highlights

Once the site of deadly and dramatic fighting in World War II, Alotau has a permanent place in history that is much better understood when one stands at this critically strategic Pacific crossroad. Alotau is now a sleepy South Pacific township, which would not be out of place in Michener’s South Pacific. Your Yachting Land Adventure will depart the pier by local bus to show you the highlights of Alotau and the surrounding area. Leaving the pier, you will drive through the town center and then up to the Toptown Lookout, your first stop, to photograph the panoramic view of Milne Bay. From here, you head out of town to the Kainako War Memorial. This memorial commemorates the Battle of Milne Bay, in which a garrison of mainly Australian infantry fought off Japanese forces to retain the airfield and win a battle that was a turning point in WWII. It is considered the first battle in which Japanese land forces were forced to withdraw completely, which boosted Allied morale. You and your fellow SeaDream guests reboard your buses for the short drive to first Boitunum and then Dulia villages. Here you are treated to a traditional sing-sing, a cultural performance involving colorful dress and handmade instruments, including the kundu, an hourglass-shaped hand drum. Returning to Alotau, you stop at the local vegetable and art market. Here you will see an array of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as a selection of handmade bilims, the traditional carry bag of the people of PNG. Your final stop is the WWII Monument adjacent to the Alotau International Hotel. Here, there is also a display of art from the Milne Bay Province – pottery, carvings, basketwork, musical instruments – as well as items from other regions, offering your first shopping opportunity in PNG, before returning to your SeaDream Yacht.

Banda Neira, Moluccas

Neira Town Stroll

These islands are very remote – In order for our licensed operators to oversee the operation, they have an interesting journey to meet you. There are no flights to Banda Neira and to get there, they have to use a service ship (Pelni ship is schedule every 10 days). First they must fly from Bali to Makasar – Masker to Ambon and from Ambon by ship to Banda Neira. This impact our rates and therefore you might find them higher than usual. Take a guided stroll through Neira town. Your guide will tell you a little about the local and colonial history, and show you some of the riches of the Banda Islands, the spices. Your first stop will be Rumah Budaya, this is traditional colonial house showcasing some of the material heritage of Banda Neira, with photos and an antique collection. Pass by the house of Captain Christopher Cole, the Captain of British Marines who captured Belgica fort and the Island of Neira from the Dutch in 1810, on route to the Old Church. Visit the Old church built in 1611 by Mr. Pieter Both, the Dutch Governor of Banda from 1611 – 1621. It was once the jewel of Banda’s colonial buildings. In the interior, you will see ornaments and the tombstone lined floors that bring weight to the history of the islands. The mini palace or “istana mini” was the residence of the head of the VOC, the Dutch trading company that ran the Dutch East Indies. Along one side, you will see the statue of William III, one of the Dutch Kings. Hatta house was the residence of a local hero, and the country’s first Vice-president. As you walk through the Nassau fort and towards the Belgica Fort, you will pass the “Perigi Rante”, the Rante Well, where the Dutch massacred the local leaders, and thus consolidated monopoly of the nutmeg plantations. Built in 1611, Belgica fort is a pentagonal fort built on the southern hills only 30m above sea level to reinforce the Nassau Fortress situated below it. The open central courtyard has 2 wells, with a channel linking it to the Nassau Fortress located on the Beach head below. You can view the panorama of the Banda Islands and also the volcano Gurung Api from the sturdy walls of this fort. Unlike the Belgica Fort, which has been restored, Fort Nassau has been left unrestored, and is filled with atmosphere. Visit the Nutmeg plantation; see the trees of the “fine spices” that made the Banda Island so heavily fought-over. Take a moment to taste the local nutmeg jam, and enjoy a piece of cinnamon cake with a cup of coffee or tea, before your return to the pier and your SeaDream yacht.

Komodo Diving at Pink Beach

OYour dive site at Pink Beach is called Pantai Merah by local people. The naming describes the place well: it has red colored sand. This Komodo diving site is part of Komodo Island's shoreline. It is probably the most well-known Komodo dive site as you have to pass this dive site when you want to see the fiery dragons from the park station Generally, the dive site is a good place with clear water. Pink Beach is between 5 and 30m deep with visibility between 8 and 25m. Sometimes it sees occasional current of 0-1 knot, with rather stronger current flows in the area between Punya Island and Komodo Island. The current represents the transition between the temperate water in the south and the tropical water of the north Marine life is rich here with the schooling fish, fusiliers, as the dominant species. When you go deeper, you find pelagic such as snapper, trevallies, and sweetlips. At around 25m, the coral outcrops drops rather slightly. Around the corals, you can find reef fish like cardinal, butterfly, damselfish, grouper, angel, batfish, anthias, wrasse, surgeon, parrot, box, trigger, porcupine, and puffer. Flounder, Moray, Gobies, Frogfish, Eels and Leaf fish are permanent bottom dwellers at this Komodo diving site. Octopus, shrimp and crabs are easily visible. Snakes and turtles are rarely visible here as well as the rays and sharks, but sometimes you can meet white tip shark.
