Ports

  • Venice

Venice has been known as the "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals". Luigi Barzini, writing in The New York Times, described it as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man". Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities. Founded in the 5th century, the city stretches across 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic. In 1987 Venice and its Lagoon was inscribed as an UNESCO Heritage site. SeaDream typically docks at the San Basilio pier after navigating by the famous St. Mark’s Square down the grand canal. With its yacht stature, SeaDream vessels are amongst the very few commercial vessels that can navigate this famous waterway. SeaDream does offer Land Adventures when overnighting. You can also contact our destination specialists should you need a private arrangement, transfer or hotel recommendation.

  • Hvar

Hvar is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. The island of Hvar is somewhat unusual as it is blessed with a large fertile coastal plain, and fresh water springs. Its hillsides are covered in pine forests, with vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and lavender fields in the agricultural areas. The climate is characterized by mild winters, and warm summers with many hours of sunshine. Guests have an option to kayak down the coastline on one of our land adventures or take an independent hike up to the fortress to have some incredible views of the picturesque harbor. You also have an option to bike across the island to Starigrad and meet up with the other guests on the land adventure called “The best of Both Worlds”.

  • Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik (Pearl of the Adriatic) is one of the most prominent destinations in the Adriatic Sea. It lies in the region of Dalmatia and was awarded World Unesco Heritage status in 1979. The population is approximately 43,000 and is considered to be among the 10 best medieval walled cities in the world. SeaDream anchors off the walled city as a port of call and tenders directly to the town gate. If you check the land adventures tab you will see that there are many different options to consider in this incredible town. Dubrovnik is also an embarkation point on select voyages. On these occasions the yacht is docked at the cruise terminal.

  • Kotor

Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro. The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by an impressive city wall built by the Republic of Venice and the Venetian influence remains dominant among the architectural influences. In 1979 the Bay of Kotor, City of Kotor and the surrounding territory have been listed in the UNESCO Heritage as a Cultural Site. SeaDream usually navigates close by the small islands of St. George and Our Lady of the Reef. The Bay of Kotor stretches 28 km and is one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea. It is sometimes called the southern-most fjord in Europe (though it is actually a submerged river canyon called a ria). SeaDream typically docks steps away from the town. SeaDream has arranged a few different Yachting Land Adventures. One of them is a walking discovery and the other will show you the heritage and countryside of Montenegro. For the active guests, there’s incredible biking along the coast as well as a hike up to the fortress. On occasion, SeaDream may dock in the bay and tender directly to the town. We regret that watersports are not allowed in this protected area.

  • Sarande (Butrint), Albania

This attractively situated port and seaside town lies in the very south of Albania, close to the border with Greece. The Greek island of Corfu can be clearly seen across the channel. The town is built back from a small beach with a pleasant palm-fringed esplanade. Located close by are not one, but two different UNESCO World Heritage sites! The first is the ancient city of Butrint which is now a national park where the remains of 3,000 years of occupation are piled on top of one another. The other site is the town of Gjirokastra, where the old town is a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town.

  • Itea (Delphi)

Itea is a small town situated on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth, 2 km west of Kirra, 8 km southwest of Delphi. The town has a nice beach along with some shops, cafes and restaurants. It allows the closest access to the incredible sight of Delphi which is within the top three archeological attractions in Greece and in 1987 was inscribed as a UNESCO Heritage Site. It is believed the Zeus wanted to find the center of the Earth so he sent two eagles flying from the eastern and western extremities and where they met was Delphi – becoming the “navel/center of the earth”. SeaDream has arranged the very best guides and vehicles from Athens to further enhance this incredible visit. Your guided visit highlights the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo, where Pythia, the celebrated Oracle dwelt, the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Way, the amphitheater, the best preserved stadium of Greece, and the Castalia Spring, where in ancient days the pilgrims had to wash before they were allowed to consult the Oracle. In the Delphi Museum, see such treasures as the Omphalos, which marked the center of the world, and the magnificent bronze Charioteer, one of the finest pieces surviving from the 5th century BC. After the museum there will be free time to visit the village of Delphi. SeaDream has the option of docking along the small pier in Itea or anchoring off to provide water sports options. This is dependent on availability as well as the amount of guests visiting the archeological site.

  • Corinth Canal (Transit)

So narrow! So dramatic! You'll understand why SeaDream says "expect the unexpected" as your yacht transits the Corinth Canal. The canal was first completed in 1893, despite previous attempts from ancient times; the first plans being from 602BC. The Roman emporer Nero actually started construction in 67AD, making the first cut himself with a golden pick. The canal we transit is 6.3 kilometres (3.9 mi) in length. Before the canal, ships sailing between the Aegean and the Adriatic had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese Peninsula adding about 185 nautical miles to their voyage.

  • Hydra

There is one main town on Hydra, known simply as "Hydra port". It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area. The charm of Hydra town certainly lies in her rich history, beautiful port and waterfront unspoiled by motorized vehicles. The island offers a rugged charm and some spectacular scenes, and makes the perfect place for some self-exploration.

  • Athens (Piraeus)

Athens is the capital as well as the largest city in Greece. It is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. SeaDream will embark guests from the port of Piraeus. Should you desire a private arrangement, transfer, or other local service, please see the Land Adventures tab for our destination specialists information.

  • Venice - Romantic Gondola Evening Serenade

    Description

Since Venice began there have always been gondoliers. By the 11th century most were in private service with patrician families. There were about 10,000 gondoliers in Venice in the 16th century, and today there are fewer than 400. Great skill is required to steer a boat through the narrow canals of Venice. Each gondola is 36 feet long, 4 feet wide and weighs 1,100 pounds. A gondolier serves a 10-year apprenticeship under a padrone before getting his own permit. A licensee must be native-born, and, since new licenses are not issued, must wait until a colleague gives up a license before getting his own. Their union offers free courses in foreign languages, art history and the history of Venice, but the gondoliers are not given singing lessons - every Italian seems to have a natural talent for song. Join us for a romantic tour through the canals of Venice. Riding four per gondola, you will traverse the smaller, less trafficked canals, enjoying the soft lights and balconied waterfront homes, and be serenaded as you glide along.

  • Itea (Delphi) - The UNESCO Site of St Lucas Monastery & Arachova Village

    Description

SeaDream has arranged an excellent alternative for those guests who may have already been to see the oracle at Delphi. St Loukas, is a historic walled Monastery and has been awarded Unesco's World Heritage listing. You and your fellow guests will enjoy a wonderful walk around the picturesque streets of Arahova traditional village. From your SeaDream Yacht board your deluxe a/c motor coach at Itea port and after passing by Delphi & Arachova villages, you will arrive at the St Lucas monastery. This incredible site is an historic walled monastery and one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art. It was founded in the early 10th century by the hermit St. Lucas, whose relics are kept in the monastery to this day. The main shrine of the monastery is the tomb of St. Lucas, originally situated in the vault, but later placed at the juncture of the two churches, the church of Theotokos and the Catholic Church which is the oldest in the complex tentatively dated to 1011-1012. Following your visit to the monastery you proceed to Arachova. Arachova is a traditional mountain village of 3,000 inhabitants with its quaint houses built up on the north slopes of Mount Parnassos and at an altitude from 2,700 to 3,600 feet. In 2000 B.C. Homer mentioned in the Iliad two famous generals who took part in the Trojan War Epistrophos and Schedias from the old towns of Anemoria and Kiparissos. These old towns were situated around where Arachova stands today. Later, in about 334 B.C. Philip the 2nd king of Macedonia destroyed both towns and their populations were dispersed over the hills until over the years one new town, Arachova, was built. Today the 'jewel' of Parnassos Arachova remains vital because it keeps its' traditions alive and the residents remain simple and hospitable. From the first moment you will feel a different wind blowing up here, and understand why the locals work so hard to upkeep the areas' natural beauty! Browse through its narrows streets with the numerous souvenir and local products shops before your return to the yacht.

  • Dubrovnik - Traditional Dubrovnik

    Description

This is an opportunity to explore the beautiful natural setting of the green and fertile Konalve valley. Scenic drive through the small and picturesque villages will first take you to the village of Ljuta where you will visit Old Mill called Mlinica Dvori which is still in function today. Here you will be able to see demonstration of flour production using traditional methods where the water power stone mill. There is a system of watermills and stamp mills built on river Ljuta which consisted of eight watermills for flour, two watermills for oil and three stamp mills. When the Dubrovnik Republic bought Konavle, there were four mills on the upper stream of the river. After 1550, the system called “lower mills” was built and has been preserved until today. The functioning of the mills was based on a canal system, and some of them were driven by three aqueducts. Most of the buildings were on the western bank apart from the Đivanović stamp mill, which was on the eastern bank. The mill system was extremely important for the economy of Konavle and the Republic as a whole. The river source and the upper stream is under protection of the Government as a park of nature, whereas the watermill is protected as a cultural monument. Upon visiting Watermills and Stamp Mills continue your trip toward Gruda Village where Antonia Ruskovic keep tradition of small ancient handcraft of silk production. Silk is one of the oldest textile fibers known to mankind. During the Roman Empire, it was sold for its weight in gold. Here in Konavle Valley, near Dubrovnik, women keep alive the ancient craft of silk production, not for profit but for the sake of tradition. The silk thread produced here is mostly used for embroidering the beautiful national costume of the Konavle region. In the 1990s, during the war in Croatia, the Konavle Valley was occupied by hostile forces and many of its houses were sacked and burned down. Along with the houses, hundreds and hundreds of handmade national costumes were lost. After the war ended, the women of Konavle decided to start from scratch so that they could leave a piece of their beautiful heritage for future generations. They started making the costumes even when they were still refugees. Several volunteer groups were formed to help. This Cruise with Purpose excursion enables you to share in this magnificent cultural endeavor as you produce a silk thread in the age-old, traditional manner. The thread you produce will be used to embroider new costumes. Listen to an explanation of the whole process, from cocoon boiling, to thread reeling, dyeing, plying, reeling, weaving, and embroidering. Enjoy the hospitality of a host in the village and connect with some of this ancient country's profound cultural values as you actively participate in their rebirth and restoration. Upon this very unique experience continue your trip toward Dubrovnik for the guided tour of the Old Town.

  • Corinth Canal (Transit) - Transiting The Corinth Canal

    Description

So narrow! So dramatic! You'll understand why SeaDream says "expect the unexpected" as your yacht transits the Corinth Canal. The Corinth Canal was built in the late nineteenth century and created a new sea route by linking the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs. Until that time, ships sailing between the Aegean and the Adriatic had had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese Peninsula adding about 185 nautical miles to their voyage. However, in antiquity the Greeks had devised a way of solving the problem of communications between the two seas. In the late seventh or early sixth century BC, the tyrants of Corinth constructed a paved road called the Diolkos, which led from Schinous on the Saronic Gulf to Poseidonia on the Gulf of Corinth. The Dioikos was 3- 3.5 m. wide, and it was paved with blocks of limestone set in a deep layer of sand and gravel. Along this ran the olkos vehicle on which ships were borne overland from one side of the Isthmus to the other. Sections of the Diolkos can still be seen today; the deep parallel ruts in the road, 1.50 m. apart, are the marks left by the wheels of the olkos. The ancient Greeks had of course, considered the possibility of digging a canal through the Isthmus. The first to look into the matter was Periander, tyrant of Corinth, who drew up a plan for a canal in 602 BC. Subsequent planners included Demetrius Poliorcetes, Julius Caesar and Caligula. These plans were later adopted by Nero, who in 67 AD announced to the spectators at the Isthmian Games that he was going to join the two seas by digging a canal through the Isthmus; indeed, he went so far as to cut the first turf himself, with a golden pick, and to carry the first basket of earth on his back. But his plans came to nothing, as did those of Herodes Atticus, the Byzantines and the Venetians in later times. The canal we see today was built in 1882 -1893 by Greek and French engineers using the most advanced machinery of the day. General supervision of the enormous undertaking was in the hands of General Stepan Tupp, aide-de-camp to the King of Italy. The project was completed by the Greek Corinth Canal Company. The canal is 6,343 m. in length. It has a width of 24.60 m. at surface level and 21.30 m. at the seabed, and in some places its sides are 79 m. high. The canal is crossed by road and railway bridges, while communications between Central Greece and the Peloponnese are also served by two ferries in the form of submersible bridges, one at either end (Poseidonia and Isthmia).

  • Sarande (Butrint), Albania - UNESCO Heritage Site of Butrint

    Description

The easily-defended site of Butrint has made it a magnet for occupation for at least the last 3,000 years. The result is a kaleidoscope of civilizations, all built on top of one another; Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian. Your Land Adventure will start with a panoramic drive from the port of Sarande through rural Albanian countryside, giving beautiful views of the Park from the South-East side of Lake Butrint. Along the way, the guide will give you an introduction to local history and the culture of Albania. According to one of the many legends of the first settlement of Butrint, in the 12th century B.C., Helenus, son of King Priam of Troy, after the fall of his city, sailed west to establish a new settlement. On his journey he landed in the island of Corfu and decided to sacrifice a bull to Apollo. The wounded bull escaped and swam across to the mainland. Helenus followed by ship and, taking this event at an auspicious sign from Apollo, built there a smaller version of Troy, giving to it the name Voutrotos, which means in the ancient Greek language "the wounded bull". Inhabited since prehistoric times, the area of Butrint has been the site of a Greek colony, a Roman city, a Byzantine port and has fallen under the influence of the Normans, Venetians and Ottomans. Following a period of prosperity under the Byzantines, then a brief domination by the Venetians, the city was abandoned in the late middle ages after marshes formed in the area. The present archaeological site is a collection of ruins representing each period in the city's development. The excavations in Butrint started before Second World War. An Italian archaeological group headed by Luigi Ugolini made their excavations in the period 1928-1939. More recently, the Albanian Institute of Archaeology has undertaken the excavations with the assistance of the Butrint Foundation founded by the English Lord Rothschild and Lord Sainsbury in 1993. The site has been certified as a UNESCO World Heritage. At the site, your guided walking exploration will take you through the city of Butrint where you can admire monuments of many different civilizations. This will lead you up to the Acropolis overlooking the site and a short visit will be made at the Museum, refurbished and reopened in 2005. Refreshments will be served, before you re-board the coaches for our drive back to the port.
