Fortified Jersey & The Underground Hospital

Fortified Jersey & The Underground Hospital

The German Occupation of Jersey began two weeks after the British government had demilitarized the Island. Jersey was occupied by German airborne troops on July 2, 1940. Hitler ordered that Jersey be turned into an impregnable fortress island.

Leaving the port you will enjoy the drive out to the south coast and Noirmont with its coastal fortifications & gun emplacements. Enjoy a walk around lovely Noirmont headland before rejoining your coach for the drive to visit the German Underground Observation Museum (also known as the Jersey War Tunnels or German Hospital). On arrival you will be met by the curator who will personally show you around. The Museum is one of Jersey's most important World War II landmarks. To safeguard their possession and as part of Hitler's Atlantic Wall initiative, the Germans launched an enormous program of defenses in Jersey. The German Underground hospital is one of many such systems excavated all over the Island. The labor required for this building work was supplied by the organization TODT, more than 5,000 OT laborers from all over Europe and North Africa were brought to Jersey. You will enjoy a guided visit of the HOSPITAL with your expert local guides before returning to your SeaDream Yacht.
