Visit a Mountain Farm
You start by driving the "Eagle's Road" - the only means of communication with the outside world during the wintertime! The "Eagle's Bend" is a wide curve from where there is a splendid views to the fjord below and the mountain world all around. You get a glimpse of the "Seven Sister's" waterfall in the distance as well as some of the abandoned mountain farms clinging to the sheer cliff sides. You soon reach Eidsdal village on the Norddalsfjord and follow the shores on to the village of Norddal. Now you leave the fjord and drive up the valley until you reach the summer farm Herdalssetra, situated at approx. 5000 ft above sea level. The setting is picturesque and during the summer months some 450 goats roam freely, as well as cows, sheep and fjord horses; the blond pony native to the West coast. Goat cheese is being produced; both white and brown, and we can follow some of the procedure. The 30 small, wooden houses with turfed roofs were built under the mighty peak called Heregga, away from the annual avalanches. You get an introduction to cheese making and of course tasting of samples.... On the way down the valley once more we can admire the lovely Heregga River, cascading in several impressive waterfalls. We reach Eidsdal and return to Geiranger via the Eagle's road.
Notes: Guests must be able to walk approximately 0.25 mile over even and grassy surfaces with 2 to 5 steps. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are recommended. Note that the animals are moved up to the summer grazing when the snow melts. The tour will visit the home farm if snow conditions do not permit our visit to the summer farm.
