The "Green Venice" - Pure Nature
Departure from the port of La Rochelle via le Marais Poitevin. A strange monochrome of greens where canals plunge then disappear into extraordinary surroundings: you are in the « Wet Marshes », a magical place between the Vendee, Aunis and Poitou. A flat damp, wooded land with a stop along the migratory birds route, a stream of canals, shellfish farmers raised huts and rows of whitewashed sheds: the "Green Venice" was the nickname given by Henry IV (1553-1610) as he was charmed by the grace and the beauty of this land. Continue to the Sevre Niortaise along which you discover picturesque white villages. Next a Canal boat trip (black gondola) takes you through the secrets of this "green silence": follow the rhythm of the « pigouille » (forked pole) as it goes through the still water, discover this magical scenery where frogs, dragonflies, ducks and herons abound. Next, a peaceful drive backs through the tiny villages and return to the port of La Rochelle.
