Belle Ile & Oyster Tasting
The history of Brittany has always been tightly bound up with the sea It is renowned for its fishing activity, but one should not forget the shellfish culture and moreover the oyster farming. Brittany, which has long been the great production region for flat oysters, has now developed its Portuguese and even Japanese cupped oyster beds. There are considered to be at least a dozen excellent types of Breton oysters. The biggest maturing beds on the Breton Atlantic coast lie between Audierne and Le Croisic, mainly in River d'Etel and River Penerf, Quiberon Bay and The Golf du Morbihan. Off this coastline, in the open sea, stands Belle Ile, "la bien nommee". It is the largest of all Breton islands with a coastline comprising cliffs, creeks and beaches, sloping gently down on the North side while presenting a wild face to the open sea. From Le Palais, the island's little capital, dominated by a citadel built in the mid 16th century, we leave for a short tour of the Island. We first reach Sauzon in the North West; which lies at the entrance to a winding valley. Once a stronghold for pirates, the little fishing port has since attracted many artists for its bright colors and its surrounding landscape. Next Port Goulphar and Port Coton: the stretch of coast surrounding the Grand Phare, the islands' tall lighthouse, is the most spectacular of the whole island. From the fiercely weather-beaten cliffs we discover the Port Coton needles, pyramids of rocks worn and shaped by the ocean. After our discovery of the island we proceed to a restaurant where we can indulge ourselves with an oyster opening and tasting in the fresh sea air (or inside if bad weather). After the opening of your shellfish, you will be invited to sample oysters with a glass of white wine.
