Shipwrecks and Champagne
When local diver Christian Ekstrom was exploring a shipwreck not far from Mariehamn harbor in July last year he made a remarkable discovery. In the wreck he found champagne bottles from the 1780's which makes them the oldest in the world. The news went worldwide. You may recall having read about it. Meet the divers and hear their exciting story. We will also enjoy a tasting of the champagnes of today from the same vinyards. After quite some detective work, the maker of the corks was traced and through them the it has been established that they come from three different producers; Heidsieck , Veuve Clicquot and Juglar, all world famous for their products. We have organized a private evening onboard the museum tall ship Pommern where you will meet some members of the diving team and hear the story how the bottles were found and what has happened with them since. We have also arranged a champagne tasting with a small Aalandic snack to "wake " up the flavor in these wines.
