Santiago De Compostela - Pilgrim's Goal
We depart the port of Vigo for the one hour drive by motorway to Santiago de Compostela, one of the most important places in the world for Christian pilgrimage. This pilgrimage site became a symbol of the Spanish Christians' struggle against Islam. Destroyed by the Muslims at the end of the 10th century, it was completely rebuilt in the following century. With its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings, the Old Town of Santiago is described by UNESCO as one of the world's most beautiful urban areas. Your first stop will be in Obradoiro Square where you will visit the marvelous 15th century hotel of the Catholic Kings, built during the reign of Isabella and Ferdinand. Originally a hospital for pilgrims, the building is now a spectacular hotel, with a blend of Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque styles gracing its rich and inviting interior. Later you cross the square to view the High Altar of the town's enormous cathedral. Your licensed guide will show you the Jubilee Door where pardons are dispensed. The Portico de Gloria dates back to 1188, and is considered a cornerstone of medieval sculpture. After your visit of the cathedral you head back to the hotel to gather in the courtyard for cocktails. Here, you will be treated to a special dance demonstration by a typical Galician performance group and you will be able to sample local specialties. You will have some free time to do a little shopping, before returning to Vigo.
