Bilbao & The Guggenheim Museum

Bilbao, the industrial and financial capital of the Basque Country, is situated between two ranges of hills on both sides of the River Nervion. The iron ore mines near the city were discovered by the Romans, who paved the way for the numerous foundries later built on both banks of the river. Today, the city is undergoing a spectacular transformation. In the quarter of Abandoibarra, you will find the famous Guggenheim Museum designed by North American architect Frank O. Gehry. This love-it-or-hate-it architectural environment represents some of the most groundbreaking architecture to have come out of the 20th century. You will explore the impressive permanent and temporary exhibits on a guided visit inside and outside of the museum, followed by some free time for your own exploring. On leaving the Museum, you take a short drive down to the Old Quarter located on the right bank of the river Nervion, an area which has undergone huge reconstruction following a devastating flood in 1983 and where many of the streets are now pedestrian. Here you will view the 14th-century Gothic cathedral, the Arriaga Theatre, the Plaza Nueva and the Bilbao Ria, which separates the old and the new city. In Basque cities, it is typical for the locals to make an entire lunch or dinner out of the surprising and delicious miniature cuisine known as "pintxos' (Basque equivalent for "tapas"), a dining experience like no other. The Basque pintxos are reputed to be the best in Spain, with a wide variety from traditional grilled wild mushrooms, stuffed spicy peppers, cured ham or more avant-garde creations. You and your fellow SeaDream friends will lunch in a traditional restaurant on the local "tapas" complimented by local wines. After lunch there will be a little free time to browse and shop at your leisure in the Old Quarter among chic boutiques, perfume stores and cafes before our return to the yacht in Santander.
