Bayona – Sights, Tastes & Wines of Galicia
Bayona (also spelled Baiona) is a beautifully situated little port town which is now a popular seaside resort. It is also a fishing village which has managed to maintain its ancient appearance, with its medieval old quarter of narrow streets and stone building. In addition to its excellent beaches and old quarter, Bayona has a magnificent 16th century fortress overlooking the town which has been converted into a 4 star Parador. Bayona claimed its place in history when it became the first place in the Old World to learn of the discovery of America from one of Columbus' returning caravels, La Pinta, which anchored in the tiny bay on April 1st, 1493. Starting from Vigo, your motor coach will take you up Monte Castro for a view of the city and harbor before proceeding to Bayona. In Bayona your adventure will start with a guided walking orientation of the old quarter and some time to browse on your own. You will then be guided up the walls of the Monte Real castle to the Parador where you have the opportunity to taste local wines of Galicia accompanied by the local variety of tapas. The regions close proximity to Portugal and virtual isolation from the rest of Spain has had a marked influence on the style of wines from Galicia with many of them being closer in style to Portuguese wines. After a relaxing time at the Parador, the motor coach will take you back to Vigo and the yacht.
