Montserrat & Antigua by Helicopter
Departing the Fort James helipad, your helicopter flight is sure to leave a deep impression of nature's devastating power and beauty as you head to the neighboring island of Montserrat which suffered Nature's wrath in 1995 when the 3,300-foot Soufriere Hills Volcano erupted, creating flows of hot gas, molten rock, ash and mud that billowed down the side of the mountain at speeds of 100 miles per hour. In the center is the still active volcano, which frequently emits ash, smoke and steam. Your pilot stays safely upwind of the cone, while making passes that allow a spectacular view of the peak and the massive Tar River Gorge a thousand feet below. Fly next to Plymouth, former capital of Montserrat. Now completely uninhabited, the sight of much of the island's main population center and surrounding villages buried under ash and rock must be seen to be believed. Fly over the empty runway of the W.H. Bramble Airport that was closed when a direct hit from lava flows destroyed it in 1997. Before returning to Antigua, fly back to the eastern coast of Montserrat for spectacular views of cliffs and another view of the volcano that changed thousands of lives in a short space of time. From the helipad, air conditioned buses take you on a picturesque drive through the Antiguan countryside before returning to SeaDream.
