She is a slim, green slice of land punctured by jagged inlets and sleepy villages. Two of the most charming and "rediscovered" Croatian towns along the Adriatic coast are yours to explore today. We begin from our anchorage off the Island of Hvar and tender into the town given the same name. Hvar is one of the Adriatic's most enchanting and well-preserved historic towns known for its fragrant heather, lavender, laurel and rosemary. Once an important harbor for Venice's Adriatic fleet from the late 12th to 18th centuries, you'll discover a fascinating array of sights within the thick- walled fortress town. Highlights include the Cathedral of St. Stephens with its treasury and bell tower, very distinct marks of the former Venetian rule. During our walk we will also check out the Arsenal, built in 1611 and housing Europe's oldest theater. Long before it was fashionable, the theater allowed the masses to buy seats in the pit, while the landed gentry sat in raised boxes. After a visit of Hvar on foot we will take a scenic 40-minute drive through the Island of Hvar to the seaside village of Starigrad, once the islands largest settlement dating back as far as the 2nd century BC. In Starigrad we will visit the Dominican Monastery, with its rich library containing priceless books and paintings. Upon our return to the town of Hvar we will stop at the Fortress above the Island for a magnificent view.
