Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky Theatrical Performances
St. Petersburg is considered the motherland of Russian ballet and is known for its musical traditions that date back almost 300 years when Imperial Ballet Academy (now famous Vaganov School) was opened here in 1738. Among its graduates were such world famous dancers as Matilda Kshesinskaya, Anna Pavlova, Galina Ulanova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nuriev and many others.
World renowned Mariinsky Theater, known during Soviet times as the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theater, is the historic theater of Imperial Saint Petersburg. Opened in 1860, it became the pre-eminent music theatre of late 19th century Russia, where many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov received their premieres. In the last 20 years Valery Gergiev as lead conductor has reinvigorated the theater and its productions. Today Mariinsky productions of the famous ballets are arguably the most spectacular you will find anywhere in the world. Every summer since 1993, the "Stars of the White Nights" music and ballet festival is held in the theatre and is regarded as one of the top ten festivals in the world. In 2013 second stage of the theatre was opened and is today one of the most technically and acoustically advanced.
The Mariinsky was only one of the two great theaters of imperial St Petersburg. The Mikhailovsky Theatre, located on Arts Square, was opened in 1833, on the name day of Tsar Nicholas I's brother Grand Duke Mikhail. Like its sister theater, it has recently been extensively renovated and restored to its former glory by its new general director, local tycoon Vladimir Kekhman.
