Istanbul was selected as a European Capital of Culture for 2010. Historic areas of the city were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. Istanbul is a transcontinental city, straddling the Bosporus, one of the world's busiest waterways in northwestern Turkey. It is situated between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Its commercial and historical center lies in Europe, while a third of its population lives in Asia. SeaDream calls to this wonderful destination both as an embarkation point and a destination offering several land adventures. Please check the Land Adventures tab for all of the possibilities as well as embarkation and transfer information.
Skopelos and Skiathos are part of the Sporades island group. Greener and less crowded than the Cyclades islands further south. The producers of the movie "Mama Mia" filmed the movie on these two islands. Weather permitting, we will sail by the headland with the wedding chapel shown in the movie.
A green island with 65 beaches. The beach scenes in "Mama Mia" were filmed here. We anchor off the attractive Skiathos Town.
Kusadasi is a resort town on Turkey's Aegean coast and the center of the seaside district of the same name in Aydin Province. Some visitors simply want to go shopping at the grand bazaar and see a carpet demonstration. Hopefully you have practiced your negotiating skills for these authentic copies, original reproductions as well as the real deal. Others will make time to see the Wonders of Ephesus. This comprehensive SeaDream Land Adventure includes a guided tour of the stunning archaeological site of Ephesus including the recently excavated Terrace Houses, but also adds a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary. For any traveler arriving to this region in Italy it simply can’t be missed!
Patmos is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea within the Dodecanese group of islands. It has a population of 3,000 and an area of 34 sq. km. This destination is recognized worldwide as The Jerusalem of the Aegean. This is a sacred island for it is believed to be the place where Saint John wrote the Book of Revelations. Patmos is an ideal destination for nature lovers thanks to its lace-like coastline, sheer cliffs, beautiful beaches and volcanic soil. It has been designated as a “Holy Island” by the Greek Parliament in 1981 as well as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. SeaDream has the option to anchor in the bay or dock in front of the old town. Most guests will participate in the land adventure to the cave of the apocalypse and the Monastery of St. John. Others may want to explore the village or follow the officers on a bike ride around the hilly island.
Paros is an island of Greece in the central Aegean Cyclades group. With the popularity and sometimes overcrowding at Santorini and Mykonos, Paros offers a quitter, unspoiled Cyclades option. Historically, Paros was once known for its fine white marble, which gave rise to the term "Parian" to describe marble or china of similar qualities. Some consider Paros the most beautiful in this island group – you be the judge! It has beautiful beaches and charming villages. Most visitors make an effort to see the famous Church of Ekatontapyliani (Our lady of a Hundred Doors). This church is the holy place of Paros and is linked to the history and myths of Byzantium. Tradition and history state that the church began life in the reign of Constantine the Great (280 - 337 A.D.) or Justinian (527 - 565). After its restoration in 1959, this church, the brightest jewel in the crown of Orthodoxy in the Aegean, became the third most important Christian building in Greece, after the Panayia Akheiropoietos and St. Demetrios in Thessaloniki.
Santorini also known as Thera is a volcanic island located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast from Greece's mainland. Santorini is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island, and leading to the creation of the current geological caldera.
There is one main town on Hydra, known simply as "Hydra port". It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area. The charm of Hydra town certainly lies in her rich history, beautiful port and waterfront unspoiled by motorized vehicles. The island offers a rugged charm and some spectacular scenes, and makes the perfect place for some self-exploration.
Molyvos (Mithymna), is the tourist capital of Lesvos and is famous for its unique beauty and traditional architecture. There’s a medieval castle on top of the hill and a picturesque harbor. It is Greek Island tourism at its best with all of the good qualities that attracts visitors who are sensitive to culture and tradition but are still there to have a good time. SeaDream will anchor in this beautiful tranquil bay and offer water sports as well as independent island exploration.
Nafplion is a seaport town in the Peloponnese region of Greece that expands up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. This is simply one of the most beautiful towns in the area of Argolis (in eastern Peloponnese) as well as one of the mostromantic cities all over Greece. SeaDream has the option to anchor allowing water sports or to dock in the heart of town offering amazing access. Some guests will climb nearly 1000 steps to the fortress. Others may want to participate in the wine tasting adventure or to Visit Mycenae.
Athens is the capital as well as the largest city in Greece. It is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. SeaDream will embark guests from the port of Piraeus. Hotels and Pre and Post Options

SeaDream's View: Once the private residence of a wealthy expatriate Greek, the Hotel Grande Bretagne is an architectural landmark and the historic Grande dame of the city. It was recently lavishly restored and converted to a palace hotel. We at SeaDream think it is one of Europe's finest hotels. We absolutely love its convenient location - the best in Athens, and within walking distance from the fashionable Kolonaki Square with exclusive shopping, entertainment, restaurants and cafes. Also within walking distance are important museums and the historic and picturesque old quarter of Plaka with taverns, open-air coffee shops, flea market and souvenir shops. The hotel offers 321 rooms but we recommend at least a deluxe room or one of the only 22 Junior Suites; so book early and ask for one that offers splendid views of the Acropolis, Parliament and National Gardens. We also enjoy the outdoor roof top pool and highly recommend dinner in the GB Roof Garden Restaurant. Why? You'll never forget the view, the delicious food and the mix of local and international guests that fill the restaurant nightly. Reserve early and enjoy. Acropolis Museum & Plaka to Airport

** This Land Adventure is specifically tailored for disembarking guests. Guests that are in transit are suggested to contact the team on board for other options. **

Visitors to UNESCO awarded Athens will delight in this opportunity to explore the heart of ancient Athens. Depart from the pier in your air-conditioned transportation and after a 30 minute drive you arrive at the new award winning Acropolis Museum. The museum was built in order to house every artifact found on the rock and on its feet, covering a large period of time, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. The museum opened its doors to public very recently in June 21, 2009. Nearly 4,000 objects statues including the Porch of the Caryatids that welcome visitors are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square meters. The collection of the New Acropolis Museum consists principally of sculptures, many of which originally decorated the monuments of the Acropolis. These works were created to be viewed in daylight, illuminated by subtle changes in light throughout the day. Extensive use of glass in the building’s design allows the integration of natural light into the galleries, thus ensuring similar exhibition conditions. Ambient natural light floods the top-floor Parthenon Gallery and is filtered through the gallery’s glass-floored atrium into the floors below. After the visit of the Museum you will have some free time to wander around the picturesque streets of Plaka, the old preserved district of Athens with numerous art & craft shops, restaurants and cafes. After your wanderings at the old district of Athens you will board your coach for your drive to the airport.

Hydra

Hydra Exploration

The charm of Hydra town certainly lies in her rich history, beautiful port and waterfront unspoiled by motorized vehicles, but the island itself offers a rugged charm and some spectacular scenes. Your adventure begins as you mount a donkey to explore the island views. As your sure-footed steed carries you along the narrow winding streets, pause to look at the architecture of the ship owners’ homes that line your path. Your first stop will be the Koundouriotis Mansion, one of the finest examples of the traditional 18th and 19th century architecture of Hydra. Built in 1780 by the ship owner Lazaros Koundouriotis, it now houses various items from the National Historical Museum of Athens, such as traditional costumes, jewelry, fine embroideries, pottery and wood-carvings. Continue on your ride to reach at a high vantage point the Monastery of St. Constantine and enjoy the breathtaking views of the entire harbor area. Inside the Monastery, an interesting collection of frescoes awaits. Leave your donkeys and walk down the narrow streets while stopping to admire the picturesque little alleys and the impressive Hydra mansions, offering great photographic opportunities. Upon your return to the port, visit the Church of the Dormitian, which houses splendid icons, chandeliers and other offerings from the wealthy seafarers of the island. It is even said one of the chandeliers was stolen from Louis XIV and given to the church. After your exploration, you will have ample time to shop, have lunch on the waterfront or return to the yacht for water sports.

The Wonders of Ephesus & The House of the Virgin Mary

This comprehensive SeaDream Land Adventure includes a guided tour of the stunning archaelogical site of Ephesus including the recently excavated Terrace Houses, but also adds a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary. Three popes have visited this important shrine, which is a pilgrimage site for visitors from all over the world. The House of the Virgin Mary is located on Mt. Pagus, and said to be where the Virgin Mary spent her final days. The site itself was discovered in part through the visions of an invalid nun in Germany who had never been out of her homeland. A tree-lined path leads to the ancient dwelling, tastefully restored in 1951. The tiny stone cottage exudes a calm and serenity befitting its original occupant. Below the house is the Fountain of Our Lady, where a sacred spring feeds three fonts, each bestowing a unique blessing on the visitor. Those not wishing to visit this site will be offered tea close by. The site of Ephesus gained importance from ancient time due to its well-placed port and its religious significance, which the locals were not above exploiting. After the Emperor Augustus proclaimed Ephesus the capital of the Asian Province in 27 BC, the city became one of the most important in the extended Roman Empire. Most of the buildings you will see date from that era when Ephesus had nearly one quarter million inhabitants. Begin at the Magnesia Gate, where your expert guide will take you on a leisurely downhill walk through the marble streets of the city, pausing to describe the significance of the sites along the way. View the Gymnasium, Odeon, Fountain of Trajan, Temple of Hadrian, Upper Agora, Town Hall, a Byzantine house, Roman baths, and the surprisingly efficient public toilets. One of the most imposing sites at Ephesus is the Library of Celsus. Finely decorated with columns and sculptures, the library was erected in 135 BC by a son in homage to his father. A short walk away is another significant structure, the amphitheater, which is known for its excellent acoustics. This is where St. Paul preached to the Ephesians, imploring them to give up their worship of Artemis and embrace the Christian faith. A highlight of your day will be entry to a newly opened and recently excavated portion of the historic site. The so-called Terrace Houses can be seen on the slopes behind Ephesus opposite the Temple of Hadrian. Those on the upper slopes are reached via steps and situated on the slopes of Bulbul Mountain with the roof of one house forming the terrace of the one above it. These houses were inhabited by wealthy Ephesians and are finely decorated with mosaics and frescoes. According to the evidence of the excavations, they were built in the period of Augustus and continued to be inhabited until the 7th century AD.

Notes In order to avoid congestion, the sequence of sites visited may vary. Please bring sun protection and wear flat (!), comfortable walking shoes, as there are stairs and uneven surfaces throughout the archaeological site. All guests will be issued with a state of the art listening aid called a "whisper". This will allow you to hear your guide very clearly. A minimum participation is required to operate all Yachting Land Adventures and some have limited capacity. This program is booked onboard only so please make your reservations as soon as possible after boarding to avoid disappointment. Nafplion

Helen of Troy, a Visit to UNESCO listed Mycenae

With the excellent Athens based guides and transport, you are quickly spirited along the very good roads on a scenic drive through Náfplion and past the ancient sites of Tiryns and Argos. Soon you will reach the world-famous and UNESCO listed archaeological site of Mycenae having gained your first historic introduction from the commentaries of your guide. Mycenae is the palace of Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek forces that went off to fight the famous war at Troy, where Paris, the Trojan Prince, had taken beautiful Helen, wife of Agamemnon’s brother, Menelaus, king of Sparta. The classic epic, composed by Homer, was the subject of the film “Troy” starring Mr. Brad Pitt in the role of Achilles. The German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in 1876, who was obsessed with finding the grave of King Agamemnon, carried out the first in-depth excavations. Mr. Schliemann also, in 1874, discovered the site of Troy in Asia Minor. Not bad for a German amateur archaeologist who made his fortune in the grocery trade! His diligent work exposed the famous Lions Gate, the entrance to the city, which contains the shaft burial graves of some ancient nobles. A short distance away is the Beehive Tomb, so called due to its unusual shape. In only 25 days Mr. Schliemann discovered a huge collection of jewelry vases and precious items, including the often-photographed Gold Mask, all, which are now important exhibits in the Athens Museum; if you pass through Athens on your trip, don’t miss to visit the museum. At the conclusion of your visit to Mycenae, return to enjoy the village of Náfplion on your own, or head back to the yacht.

Naoussa is considered to be one of the prettiest villages in the Cyclades and, despite the development of tourism, this lovely village has managed to keep its authenticity, its character and its charm, with its whitewashed and flowered little houses and its tiny whitewashed churches and chapels, surrounded by labyrinth-like narrow, stone-paved streets. To continue your land adventure, you will board your coach and while having a panoramic overview of the island on the way, you will proceed to the traditional village of Lefkes, a beautiful village built in an amphitheatrical style, up the main mountain with wonderful vistas all around. The town hall is especially nice being built with the famous Marble of Paros. Your next stop will be Parikia town, the capital of the island where you will visit the famous Church of Ekatontapyliani (Our lady of a Hundred Doors).

Patmos

The Book of Revelations - Monastery of St. John & Patmian House

Patmos is often called the Jerusalem of the Aegean, the sacred island where St. John wrote the Book of Revelations in the Bible. To gain a better appreciation of the islands sites and history, we invite you to join us on our uniquely interesting land adventure visit to the monastery where the resident monks will provide you with a guided walk through their sanctuaries. Don't be afraid to ask questions; almost all of them are quite interesting and love to engage in conversations with you. The driving distances from the pier are quite short so much of this land adventure is spent exploring the upper town on foot. You also have the opportunity to step into a typical Patmian home. The local guides are also helpful to point you into the right directions for any independent afternoon explorations of the upper (Chora) or lower (Skala) town on your own. And bring your Euros and credit cards. There are some interesting shops just outside the monastery. Do not forget to take in the breathtaking views from the Upper Town. Depart from the pier today for a short scenic ride to Chora and the UNESCO listed Monastery of St. John the Theologian, built high on an ancient acropolis. The monastery's massive 15th-century walls and 17th-century battlements loom over the town belying an intimate and peaceful interior of arches, inlaid pebble stone floors, and whitewashed buildings. The charming chapel of Christodoulos is profusely decorated with frescoes and the old treasury, now a museum, displays a breathtaking collection of jeweled chalices, crowns, crucifixes, vestments and old manuscripts. Travel on to the Grotto of St. John where the saint heard the voice of God and wrote his revelations. It was here, the most sacred spot on the island, where St. John the Theologian spent 16 months in exile, and this simple cave is now a chapel and place of pilgrimage. Both the Cave and the Monastery have been UNESCO listed in 1999. The iconostases built into the cave depict St. John's visions and the spots where the saint slept, wrote, and heard "a great voice, as of a trumpet." Back in Chora you'll visit one of the traditional Patmian houses, the house of the Simantiris family. The magnificence of Patmian home interiors is stunning. Entering the thick wooden entrance door is like stepping into another dimension, with Venetian style furniture, handicrafts and multi-colored mosaic ceilings dating from the 18th century. After your visit, drive through the town of Chora on the way back to SeaDream in Skala.

Notes Proper (modest) dress code is required for the monastery and the Grotto. Gentlemen must be in long trousers and ladies must wear skirts or a dress covering the knee and shoulders should be covered. Sandals or similar open footwear is allowed. This land adventure includes some uphill walking as well as steps in the upper town of Chora, the local home and at the Grotto. Therefore, flat and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. As long as you are reasonably fit we are sure that you can manage the walk and steps; a great way to exercise in some lovely surroundings! Volcano Hiking the Caldera Islands

If you have been to Santorini before, you have admired the view of the volcanic caldera from high up on the cliffs of the whitewashed villages of Fira or Oia. You may, then, have wondered about the two islands in the center of the caldera. These are the two small uninhabited volcanic islands called Nea ("New") Kameni and Palea ("Old") Kameni. On this land adventure you will have the opportunity of visiting these islands. A local caique will take you from the yacht’s side for a 15-minute boat trip over to Nea Kameni. The sail will take you along the volcanic shores with the peculiar rock formations. The black volcanic rocks contrast wildly with the white pumice, offering impressive views. After disembarking the caique, a 30 minute hike will take you to the crater of the still active volcano. During your walk up on an ascending path you will have the opportunity to observe lava fragments and the volcanic rock formations. Once you have reached the crater you will have time to relax and enjoy the view of Santorini Island and the amazing cliff-walls of the caldera. Descending back to the caique, you leave the volcanic island and sail towards the thermal springs of Palea Kameni. The boat will pass by the green sulphur-stained warm waters with temperature that reach 37 degrees centigrade. From there you will continue your boat trip back to the yacht.

Please note: There is no shade on the volcano and you should wear appropriate sun protection. Good walking shoes are required and you should consider the nature of this active land adventure when booking.

Akrotiri Archaeological Site & Oia Village

On this land adventure you will have an incredible opportunity to visit one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean, Akrotiri Archaeological site and the picturesque village of Oia. Could Akrotiri really be the lost city of Atlantis?

One of the reasons Santorini has attracted the world’s attention is the excavation at Akrotiri, which reclaimed a whole prehistoric Minoan city from the volcanic ash. The prehistoric site of Akrotiri is on the south-western tip of the island and was discovered in 1967 by Professor Spyros Marinatos as it was buried by the widespread Theran eruption in the middle of the second millennium BC. The excavations brought into light a remarkably well-preserved site with two and three-story homes decorated with marvelous wall paintings and frescoes, an advanced drainage system and many interesting objects, artworks, potteries and furniture which give a picture of a society which was very well organized and at the peak of prosperity. This was interrupted suddenly by the eruption of the volcano, which buried the entire city. An ambitious modern bio-climatic roof top structure protects this important archaeological settlement where excavation works are still in progress. Your SeaDream Land Adventure continues crossing the entire island and after a 30 minute drive you will reach the northeast part of the island and its most picturesque town, Oia. Once a major fishing harbor it is now the calmest place on the island. Built high up on the ridge of red rocks it offers breathtaking views of the blue Aegean. You leave your coaches for a stroll around the narrow streets with the old beautiful houses and the tiny picturesque shops. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the caldera cliff and wander in the narrow streets for shopping or a cup of coffee during your free time in the village. Returning to Fira town you can either take the cable car down to the port or wander around the narrow streets with the various shops and take a later cable car. For those SeaDream Active guests, you can also walk down the path back to Skala Fira (port). Now that the site has re-opened, we highly recommend you join us on this wonderful yachting land adventure.

Notes The site may be closed on Mondays although SeaDream generally can get exemptions. Kindly double check with the Club Director on board.
