When King Olav Kyrre founded the city of Bergen in 1070, there was already a busy trading center on the site. The sea faring people of the world have left many traces here buildings, place names, usage and traditions. Today, as you sail up the Byfjorden, you are entering not only a modern port but also a place with a long seafaring tradition framed by seven mountains and with the fjord in front. The first sights we pass on your SeaDream Land Adventure is HÃ¥konshallen the city's Festive Hall erected in 1261, and the Rosenkrantz Tower built in 1560. Next, you will pass the old buildings of Bryggen the Hanseatic Quarters overlooking the harbor. In 1350 the Hanseatic League was established in Bergen and controlled all trade along the Norwegian coast for more than 200 years. Opposite Bryggen is the market place with its bustling open air market. You continue through the center, passing the central park and lake before heading in southerly direction through attractive suburbs to the new Fantoft Stavechurch, rebuilt after a fire in 1992 that destroyed the old church from 1150. The new church is constructed exactly like the ones that were built in the Middle Ages, using timber from the Sognefjord area; north of Bergen. In the Middle Ages there were at least 800 of these very typical churches in Norway, today, there are only about 30 left. You continue to the composer Edvard Grieg's home "Troldhaugen", overlooking lake Nordaas. After a quick stroll in the fresh air you arrive at Troldhaugen where you will visit the villa built in Victorian style in 1885 where the composer spent the last 22 summers of his life. Here he found inspiration to write a lot of his music. We have time to walk through the grounds - both Edvard Grieg and his wife Nina have found their last resting place in the garden. The return goes via a different route back to the city center and your SeaDream yacht docked in Bergen.
