  • Lisbon - Snapshots of Lisbon

    Description

This unique overview of this UNESCO Awarded city is created for disembarking guests. This introduction provides a look at the highlights of Portugal’s charming capital. As you head to the oldest part of the city, your licensed guide will point out some of the major sights that can be enjoyed from the motor coach: The Alfama Quarter: The layout of this ancient quarter will intrigue you with its ambiance, maze of alleyways and narrow, cobbled streets lined by closely packed houses, many of Moorish design. Continue with your drive through the city center to Alto do Parque Belvedere for a photo stop and to enjoy the magnificent view over the city. 25 April Bridge and Christ the King Statue: From the viewpoint depart across the beautiful 25th April Bridge, twin of San Francisco’s Golden Gate, and constructed by the same company. Originally named the Ponte Salazar after the Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar, it was renamed in 1974 in honor of the date of the Carnation revolution. Once across the span, you will pause for photos at the base of the Monument Chris the King, a 361-foot high statue portraying the sacred heart. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Jeronimos Monastery: Crossing the bridge once again proceed to this 16th-century architectural masterpiece designed in Gothic Manueline style. The riches brought back by Portuguese explorers paid for this splendid religious monument. (Exterior view of the monastery’s church.) Belém Tower: Next, proceed to Lisbon’s prominent landmark dominating the bank of the Tagus River. From this lavishly decorated tower, Portuguese explorers were given a rousing send-off. (Photo stop) Monument to the Discoveries: Close by stands this monumental sculpture, built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry, the mastermind navigator behind Portugal's voyages of exploration and subsequent fantastic wealth. (Photo stop) Leaving the Belém area, you will be taken back to the pier or to the Airport.

  • Barcelona - Gaudi's Barcelona - Architectural Revolution

    Description

The symbol of Barcelona must surely be the incredible Sagrada Familia basilica designed by the local revolutionary architect, Antoni Gaudi. Our "Barcelona Highlights" tour gives only a photo-stop view of some of Gaudi's works. This tour will visit the interiors of both the Sagrada Familia and the Guell Park, Gaudi's greatest works. Gaudi is probably the most famous modernist architect in the world. Born in 1852, he was an attentive observer of nature and felt attracted to its forms and geometry. Our tour will start with a viewing of two of Gaudi's buildings, the Casa Mila and the Casa Batllo which have both been declared World Heritage sites by UNESCO. We will then pay a visit to Guell Park, the dream of the business man Eusebi Guell and his revolutionary architect, Gaudi. Their plan was to transform a large rocky estate in the north part of the city into a residential area, based on the English model of city-gardens. Despite the wild appearance of the park, everything in it was planned: the access, the market, the main square, the drainage, the reveries, the roads and paths, the staircases, the benches etc. The start of the First World War meant the failure of this project as a real-estate venture. The Sagrada Familia basilica is probably one of the world's most unique structures. We will visit the interior nave. Prepare yourself to be impressed with the sheer scale of this structure. Still uncompleted, work began in 1882 under the direction of Francesco de Paula Villar, who intended to give the work a Neo-Gothic style, in fashion at that time. However, the differences between the architect and the municipality led him to give up the project and was replaced a year later by Gaudi. The temple has 3 facades, one for the Birth which was built in 1891, the second one is the Passion with the Door of Faith and the third one (not yet built) will evoke the Glory of Good. When completed to Gaudi's design, the masterpiece will have 18 towers more than 100 meters high. The group of architects that is now working on the project (which is still a private foundation) dream of finishing the work by 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death.

The journey begins with an air-conditioned motor coach ride through this lovely peninsula region en route to the old town of Silves. • Portimao, Algarve - Lagos, Sagres & Cape St. Vincent

    Description

This SeaDream Land Adventure will combine the sights of Lagos with a trip to Europe’s most south westerly point! Begin your sightseeing adventure with a guided walking overview of Lagos. Enjoy some free time to wander along its quaint, narrow streets at your own pace. Lagos retains the atmosphere of its great cosmopolitan heritage in its wealth of architecture and monuments. Continue with a 45 minute drive to the small town of Sagres. Although debated, some consider Sagres to have been the headquarters of Prince Henry the Navigator’s, School of Navigation. The school may have been within the 17th-century fortress, which was defended from the shore by mighty ramparts and from the sea by towering cliffs. Prince Henry is also reputed to have created a shipbuilding yard in the small natural harbor below. Visit the fortress and the old Hermitage, which dates back to the 7th century. Here, you will view a giant pebble wind compass, known as the Rosa dos Ventos, before continuing your journey west to Cape St. Vincent. So named after the martyred St. Vincent, the cape is the site of numerous naval battles, such as that between Admiral Rodney and the Spanish in 1780 and Admiral Jervis and Admiral Nelson against the Spanish fleet in 1797. As you stand on Europe’s most south western point, admire a steadfast lighthouse whose guiding beam safely directs hundreds of ships passing the Cape every year. Having experienced the best of the Algarve, you will return with your fellow SeaDreamers to the yacht docked in Portimão.

    Description

Discover the Alhambra - dramatic highlight of historic Granada on this unforgettable land adventure. The city is beautiful in its own right, but nothing in all of Spain compares to the wealth of architectural art to be found in the city's Muslim - Hispano complex - the 14th-century Alhambra. This breathtaking example of Moslem architecture is completely encircled by walls and towers - palaces, military buildings, a fortress and the administrative centers of a bygone era all lie protected within. Explore this remarkable structure on foot and marvel at the detailed mosaics, prism-style cupolas, and stone-cast latticework that speak to a surprising grace and sophistication. The nearby Generalife, surrounded by water gardens, was the residence of Kings in need of refuge, and in direct contrast, the stunning El Vino Gate commissioned by Carlos V is built in the purest Renaissance style of the 16th-century. By special SeaDream arrangement, a typical Spanish tapas meal with wine, bottled water and dessert is provided after your walk at the Ruta del Vileta restaurant at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The restaurant is a favorite of King Juan Carlos I during the skiing holidays of the Spanish Royal Family.

  • Cartagena - Discover Cartagena – on foot

    Description

Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Moors, Christians... Find out why Cartagena was a crossroads of cultures and one of the most important cities in the ancient world on this walking adventure which will give you an entertaining insight into nearly 3.000 years of history. Your walk starts through the old quarters to behold several modernist town houses built during the most recent period of splendor in this city, between the second half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. You then plunge back in time to the period of Roman domination of this area from the 3rd century B.C. Here you find many vestiges of the Roman colonization, such as the Roman baths, "Via Augusta" (the main Roman thoroughfare in the Iberian Peninsula), and the magnificent remains of the Roman theatre, discovered by sheer chance just 20 years ago and still undergoing restoration. You then take an elevator up to the highest of the five hills which Cartagena was built on. Located overlooking the sea; this place chosen by the Christians to raise their main castle over the remains of the Moorish "Alcazar". From here you'll enjoy superb views of the whole city, including its immense natural harbor, well protected by the mountains surrounding it. The Bourbon king Carlos III chose this city to become one of the three main naval bases in Spain during the 18th century, along with "El Ferrol" and "Cadiz". Finally you will visit the Civil war Shelter-Museum. These galleries, excavated out of the "Cerro de la Concepcion" served as air-raid shelters and were still to be completed at the end of the Spanish Civil War. They were part of the works carried out to construct shelters with a capacity to hold 6,000 spectators during the considerable bombing that Cartagena was subjected to, as it was the naval base for a great part of the Republican fleet. Afterwards there will be free time to browse in the main street in the center of town, called "Calle Mayor".

In order to make this visit even more enjoyable, we will provide one guide for no more than 16 guests per each vehicle. Modern technology does all the hard work once the mini coach drops you at the Cable Car Bottom Station; it’s only a short ride, but the panorama opening out before you is sufficiently breathtaking to make you forget you are suspended in midair. Once up, peep over the Rock for a view of the huge catchments area and Catalan Bay, before striding along a wooded path to St. Michael’s Cave to admire what was a source of wonderment even in ancient times. To save time, you will board a mini-coach and travel north to your next stop. Apes spring to mind when one mentions the Rock of Gibraltar and that is your next stop. These tail-less monkeys (macaca sylvanus) are roaming free. Keep your possessions close! You will then move on to Princess Caroline’s Battery and the entrance to the Upper Galleries. This labyrinth of tunnels inside the Rock includes the great Siege Tunnels. They represent arguably the most impressive defensive system devised by man. Excavated during the Great Siege of 1779-83, they allowed the mounting of gun emplacements along the north face of the rock towards enemy positions. En route back to the yacht, your transport will pass the Tower of the Moorish Castle before entering the heart of the duty free shopping area and Main Street, where you may choose between being dropped off (and making your own way back to the yacht later) or returning directly to your SeaDream yacht.

  • Cadiz - Stunning Seville

    Description

Your Land Adventure will start with an amazing visit to the General Archive of the Indies, that is housed in one of the most emblematic buildings of Seville and represents a fundamental part of Spanish history. Here, all of the important documents regarding the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus and the subsequent Spanish colonization are stored. Additionally, the building and its contents have been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. After the interior visit of Archives of Indies, you will explore the magnificent exterior of Seville Cathedral, with its 138-feet-high central nave, tomb of Christopher Columbus and fine Gothic carvings that adorn one of the richest altarpieces in the world, followed by the Giralda, located in the northeast corner. This 12th century bell tower was formerly a minaret from the old mosque and is regarded as one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. Continuing to the Reales Alcazares, a castle-fortress built during the second half of the 14th century in Moorish style by a Christian king. After the exterior visit, you will enjoy a walking tour in Santa Cruz Quarter, where you will have free time to enjoy your lunch and explore independently. After exploring the beautiful town of Seville, board your coach and return to your SeaDream yacht.

  • Cadiz - Jerez and Sherry with views of Cadiz

    Description

Relax for a panoramic drive past the most important highlights of Cádiz; Spain Square, San Carlos Walls, Alameda Apodaca, Carmen's Church, Genoves Park, Santa Catalina and San Sebastian Castle, La Caleta Beach and its fantastic scenery, the Roman Theatre, the old Royal Prision, and the Puertas de Tierra walls that separate the new city from the Old Town. Continue through "new" Cádiz to glimpse the lollipop-shaped telecom building, Victoria Beach and the hotel district of Cádiz. Watch for the all-important football (soccer) stadium as you head 30 miles out of town on the road to Jerez. Jerez de la Frontera is famous for its strong Moorish influence and is widely known as the sherry capital of the world. In fact, it was the town's Moorish name, Scheris, which gave sherry wine its name. Tucked into the fertile hinterland of Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera enjoys its own microclimate, which enables the grapes to grow ripe and sweet. Here, you will visit the cellars, or bodegas as they are called in Spain, to learn about the process of making sherry, from grape cultivation to bottling. You will enjoy a tasting of the wines before re-boarding your coach for the return ride to Cadiz.
